WiFi Guidelines & Info.

Using the Chiefland Wireless Connection, please observe the following guidelines:

  1. The CAV WiFi connection to the Internet is via a satellite link and thus has a limited capability to handle large files. In fact if the Fair Access Policy (FAP) is invoked, it maybe 24 hours before full service is restored.

  2. Before connecting turn off any automatic updates. This includes Windows, Virus Scanning software, and any other automatic update. If everyone were to download Adobe Acrobat reader (approx 23M) it would not only bog down the system and run the risk of FAP limitations. This includes downloading large E-mail files. If you don't know how turn off these features this please ask someone.

  3. If you use the web to do quick things such as surf, check e-mail, and download small files, many people can use the web simultaneously with very little impact.

  4. The CAV wireless connection is not "presently" encrypted so use is strictly at your own risk. CAV assumes no liability to any damage or loss of data on your computers.

  5. Connecting to the wireless network is accomplished via Windows Network Connections icon or the Connection wizard. Right mouse click the Wireless Connection icon in your System Tray and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". Select the wireless connection with the highest signal strength indicated and connect.

  6. The Chielfand WiFi setup is Infrastructure, and "presently" non-secured. Everyone is responsible for their own security

  7. The 'best' available connection is;
    • SFO-Outdoors
  8. You are welcome to use my 'indoor' connections, check the signal strengths first;
    • SFO
    • SFO-KR1
  9. Contact me personally or call me at (352) 490-9867 if the network needs cycleing.
  10. Wait apx 5mins for the equipment to Boot completely before attempting to reconnect.
  11. An after Sunset reminder, Laptop and astronomical video camera monitor screens must be darkened out and shielded so no one can see them but you. This would include not only Laptops and MallinCam users but those who use other astronomical video cameras. Look around, many menbers have quite inovative ideas constructing their light shields. At the very least have several layers of dense dark cloth or towel to cover your screen until you build yourself a light shield.
