05-04-2008Chiefland Astronomy Village Fall Star Party CAV will once again host a Fall Star Party for members and non-members alike. The 2008 star party will be from Oct 24th to Nov 2nd. As always come early, stay late. This years Star Party is hosted by Tom/Lynn Crowley, John/Pattie Novak and the residents of the Chiefland Astronomy Village. The star party will be held on the new "back field" with over ten acres of available setup area. (Crowley and Novak's property). If you want to stay on other residences properties please gain their permission prior to the star party. Registration details can be found at www.chiefland.org In the past many members and guests had requested a tiered pricing based on the number of days of attendance, we have tried to answer that issue with our new pricing structure. We have also removed the "marriage penalty". This year there will be no charge for spouses and children under 18. Backfield amenities:
Come on out for 1 night or 8 and enjoy some of the best skies in the South East. Questions can be posted to the Chiefland Yahoo list or directed to Tom Crowley crowleytj at hotmail.com or John Novak Lado0 at yahoo.com We are looking for a few speakers, please contact Tom Crowley if you have a topic you wish to share. Cheers, 03-14-08 Come One, Come All to the CAV Member's Picnic the weekend of April 03-05. The Picnic will be occurring at 1500hrs Saturday on the new CAV 'expansion' Observing field between John Novak and Tom Crowley's homes. http://www.cav-sfo.com/NewChiefland.jpg This second observing field with 10-20 acres of dark sky is available for all CAV Members and their "guests". The 'original' CAV Observing field is 'exclusively' for CAV Members 'only'. No guests will be allowed on the original field as has been the rule for the past CAV Picnics. The new observing field currently has ten 110VAC 30Amp RV power receptacles, which will be increased to 12 in the near future. There are currently twelve 110VAC 20Amp receptacles available for "telescope operation only". Heavy duty cables will be daisy-chained across the field with multiple outlets for everyone's use. Several water spigots are also available. A second club house with restroom facilities is planned for completion in time for the April Picnic weekend. All standard Chiefland rules apply. The second observing field may be reached by turning left at mailbox 5310, just before Andy Druga's property. Please follow the driveway back, turning right and then left past John's Domes. This new facility is brought to you by John and Patty Novak, Tom and Lynn Crowley. The skies are slightly better because trees block the light from the roads to the North. Please do not use Tom Clark's yard as a walk-through to the expansion field. Use either the driveway at the 5310 mailbox or walk around through Alice Dodd's overflow field and Tom Crowley's gate to get to the second observing field. During March's New Moon weekend there were about 10 observers on the new facility. Initial feedback was very good, they even commented the trees to the Southwest acted as a wind block. We are striving to make the new field as astronomer friendly as possible. So come on out in April, bring a guest and try the new observing field. The Picnic is as it always has been, but this time John Novak will provide the meat, drinks. John will don his Cook's Uniform. Everyone is requested to bring a Pot-Luck plate as in the past. Be creative. "Please" RSVP John Novak at lado0@yahoo.com with the number of people in your party so he can plan his shopping trip. 01-16-08 The Chiefland observing field will be having two motorhome conventions this winter, and the front half of the field, including all the RV outlets will be taken from Feb. 11-14, and again from Mar. 25-noon on the 28th. The field will not be closed to members, but you will have to set up in the back half of the field, and there will be no power available for RVs. Also, be aware that the conventions scheduled will not be serious astronomers, so there will probably be plenty of light infractions. Neither of these conventions were scheduled during the prime new moon periods. Any questions? Talk to Tom Crowley about the Feb time slot, and Tom Clark about the March one.
