Chiefland Astronomy Village Rules

March, 2008

We would prefer to not have to post any rules. Just "be a good astronomer" should take care of it for most people. However, for the benefit of our new members and their guests, and for those who come from places where they do things differently, the following is what will be expected of you:

By driving onto the club fields, you are agreeing that you have read and will abide by these rules.

The Chiefland club observing site is for Chiefland members and their invited guests only. The site was built and is maintained by members. Except for the mowing there are no paid employees to take care of things. Everyone is expected to put $5 per person per night into the Donation Box under the pole barn to help pay club expenses.

RVs are allowed and encouraged. They must use one of the nine 30 amp outlets. Any vehicle with an air-conditioner is considered to be an RV. RVs may not plug into the other field electrical outlets - NO exceptions at any time! Heavy users of electricity, such as heaters and air-conditioners, are expected to donate enough extra to cover its cost. RVs must have windows blocked so no interior light escapes.

Dark-out rules apply at all times. No bright lights anywhere, dusk to dawn. Bright lights include computer screens, video cameras, and basically any light that would interfere with your neighbors dark adaption. Laptop and Malincam screens must be darked out and shielded so no one can see them but you. While many like wearing the new red LED head lamp, those around you find them to be a pain-in-the-eye. If anyone complains, off with your headlamp.

Please - no pets except on a leash. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets, and keeping them quiet!

Quiet time is every morning until noon. This includes pets and children. Please be considerate of those who stay up observing till dawn!

Please do not drive between the buildings and the fence. The septic tank and drain field are located in these areas.

No sleeping in the clubhouse. It makes it too inconvenient for other members to use the refrigerator, microwave, and rest rooms.

If you play music or a radio, keep the volume low so that no one can hear it but you.

Please bag your trash and take it with you when you leave. No dumpster facilities are available on site. Thank You!

You must arrive and set up before the end of twilight. First timers must be here well before sunset to learn their way around. Be careful when driving on the telescope fields after dark for safety reasons. Use parking lights only. Make sure that you know where you are and where you are going. You are responsible for any damage you cause to people, equipment, or the site.

If you plan to leave the site before dawn, park away from the observing site with your car headed away from the observing field. Parking lights only until reaching the end of the road. There are operating observatories all along the road.

Do not put anything but toilet paper in the toilets. They clog easily. Do not put garbage in the sinks.

If something breaks and needs fixed, please take care of it. Other than lawn mowing, Chiefland has no paid personnel to maintain the club field.

WARNING! Anyone may be banned from the site for misbehavior - club member or not.

AC POWER. AC Power at night is restricted to Telescope and Telescope related equipment Only. No electric heaters, refrigerators, coffee pots, microwaves, or any other high current use appliances.

GENERATORS. Generators are not permitted at night because of pollution and noise. You may run a generator during the daytime to recharge your batteries.

LIABILITY. The Chiefland Astronomy Village, (CAV) accepts NO responsibility or liability for damage, loss or injury to you or your equipment.

Laptop & Video Monitor Screens
Laptop and astronomical video camera monitor screens must be darkened out and shielded so no one can see them but you. This would include not only Laptops and MallinCam users but those who use other astronomical video cameras. Look around, many menbers have quite inovative ideas constructing their light shields. At the very least have several layers of dense dark cloth or towel to cover your screen until you build yourself a light shield.
